Joaquin García Viso

Born 14th May 1927, San Sebastian
Died 22nd July 2023, Mendaro

We have been informed by Oskar Garcia of the sad death of his father. We send our condolences to all his family.

Oskar has sent this short biography: "Joaquin Garcia Viso was born on May 14th,1927 in San Sebastian. When the Spanish Civil War began, he and his mother moved to Bilbao; his mother joined the front line as a volunteer nurse with the Republican army. When the Fascist troops were near Bilbao she managed to embark my father on the Habana, with the expedition that went from Santurtzi to Southampton. His identification number was 2246. Following recent information we now know that my father was at the Aston Colony, Oxfordshire where he helped with fundraising for money, food and clothes for the colony. In 1939 my grandma claimed his return to the Basque Country. He started working when he was 12 years old in a steel melting factory and retired when he was 58 years old. He married my mother and they had 4 children together. He had a hard life but never hated anybody. He was always with a smile on his face and was full of happiness."
